Looking for a great audiobook for boys? This is it. Further blurring the line between fact and fiction in this autobiographical novel, author Jack Gantos narrates himself, sharing the 1962 summer adventures of his eponymous hero as he navigates adolescence and a dying town caught between two eras. (His mom and his neighbor want to honor the vision of town founder Eleanor Roosevelt; his dad warns of "Commies.") History is a theme throughout, and so is death: Jack accompanies elderly Miss Volker on her duties as medical examiner and types up the obituaries she dictates. The story is a little odd and a lot funny. Gantos's delivery is dry and wry, and even when characters don't get distinctive voices, the action and emotion are utterly clear. A gem.

This entertaining audio production proves that the story of Cyrano de Bergerac stands the test of time. McCaughrean’s adaptation maintains the lyrical integrity of Edmond Rostand’s original play while making it accessible to today’s audience. Trevor Hill is perfect as Cyrano, the man with the unfortunate nose who declares his love for Roxanne through letters while hiding behind the handsome face of his rival, Christian. Hill’s portrayal will make listeners cheer for Cyrano, wish that Roxanne would realize his love for her, and despair at his tragic demise. Cynthia Bishop’s polished narration, an outstanding cast with American-accented voices, and bits of fitting music complete the applause-worthy audio experience.

Seventeen-year-old Briony Larkin believes she’s a witch who has destroyed her twin sister Rose’s mind and killed her stepmother. Her ability to commune with the mystical Old Ones of the Swampsea fills her with self-hatred. When handsome London bad boy Eldric arrives on the scene, Briony must reexamine what she has for so long assumed to be true. Billingsley’s richly atmospheric landscape and opulent language are well served by Susan Duerden’s lush vocal interpretation. The eerie voices of the Old Ones are as believable as the voices of the townsfolk. Each character has a uniquely perfect voice—from the sardonic Briony to her whiny suitor, Cecil. Rose’s mental disorder is obvious but never exaggerated. A tour-de-force performance of this elegant, mysterious novel.

When Colt's mom can no longer handle him, she sends him to his dad in Philadelphia. Harp, an urban horse trainer, is challenged by his son, who wants nothing to do with him. Narrator JD Jackson splendidly captures the street-talking Colt; Jamaica Bob, the cowboy with dreads and a melodious voice; and the entire rich and colorful cast. Jackson dramatizes the emotional changes that occur as Colt and his parents spend time together. When Colt sees the city kids care for the horses, he realizes some things are worth working for. This inspiring story is based on actual urban cowboys and illustrates unique alternatives to bad choices. Young listeners, especially boys, will love this.
