After Liverpool shipowner William Kite is hit by both the death of his wife and the deceptions of a business partner, he returns to his life on the sea. During a visit to the Colonies, the brutal murder of an old friend by American revolutionaries plunges Kite into a battle of wills with the rebels. This British seafaring novelist presents a dissenting view of the American Revolution that is at once discomforting and compelling, chronicling with well-plotted intensity the personal feud between Kite and an American rival. Joe Dunlop's narration is gripping even at the start, and grows more so as the story slowly builds.
