BULLION

Alan Caley, struggling to make ends meet, receives an invitation for a free lunch from Chuck Brogan, a childhood friend recently released from prison for stealing multimillions in gold bullion--still unrecovered. As the lunch begins, Brogan insists that Caley keep an envelope for him; later, upon returning from the men’s room, Caley finds Brogan dead. Terry Wale’s gravelly voice projects thugs with malevolence and softens for the heroes of the story. Wale is both eloquent as the obsessive Detective Cartright and brutal as the ex-cons, who have a violent language of their own. There’s no such thing as a free lunch.
