Penelope Freeman performs this romance novel with a variety of inflections and accents. Julia Howard, daughter of a toy and paper-doll manufacturer, is at loose ends after her fiancé dies in WWI. Then she meets meets two men who will change her life forever. The first is war hero, doctor, son of a manufacturer, and all- around nice guy Martin Lee-Trafford, who becomes the manager of Penelope's father's factory. The second is Latham Miller, who is ruthless in his business and personal dealings. The women in this story are characterized as breathless, sophisticated, and naïve by turns; the men's voices, suiting their personalities, are caring or cruel.
