WHAT WAS SHE THINKING? by Zoë Heller, read by Nadia May

This sad, riveting story was recently in film as NOTES ON A SCANDAL. We follow Barbara Covett, lonely sixtyish London schoolteacher, as she becomes enthralled with Sheba, a younger fellow teacher. Nadia May is brilliant with Barbara--self-deluding, jealous, controlling, snide, though always civil, and she gives voice to subordinate characters equally well.

THE WARDEN by Anthony Trollope, read by Simon Vance

The incomparable Simon Vance makes the nineteenth century live in our ears. He parses Trollope's first Barsetshire novel with aplomb. Mr. Harding is a haplessly agreeable warden of an old men's poorhouse. Vance's narrative skills help modern listeners hear the elegance of Trollope's writing and understand the writer's skewering wit.

STILL LIFE by Louise Penny, read by Ralph Cosham

Lucid descriptions of Quebec-- the land, the food, the art are part of the pleasure of this mystery that initiates a new series featuring Inspector Gamache from the Montreal Surete. WINTERSMITH by Terry Pratchett, read by Stephen Briggs

SCRIPT: In this energetic mix of boisterous fantasy, wonderful humor, and uncommon common sense, longtime Discworld series narrator Stephen Briggs gives another virtuoso performance. He delivers every line and every character voice with just the right glee, tension, and clarity. He makes it hard to resist apprentice witch Tiffany Aching, and the Wee Free Men.

THE PRESTIGE by Christopher Priest, read by Simon Vance

Priest's novel—winner of the World Fantasy Award in 1996, uses journal entries to tell the story of two warring stage magicians at the turn of the century. Simon Vance's narration is remarkable—expertly portraying these two mysterious men as their lives (and their tricks) are slowly revealed.

NATURAL FLIGHTS OF THE HUMAN MIND by Clare Morrall, read by Patience Tomlinson

Two recluses living near Dorset coast, find each other, and then an old biplane--and thereby hangs a tale, gently told with charm, humor, and empathy. Tomlinson's characterizations are convincing and likable. She chats rather than reads, as if, over tea and crumpets, she's telling friends of people she knows and events she's witnessed.

WILD FIRE by Nelson DeMille, read by Scott Brick

The husband-and-wife team of John Corey and Kate Mayfield must foil a plot to provoke the US government into launching a nuclear attack on the Muslim world. Scott Brick's tone of irony and sarcasm for the wisecracking Corey and quieter tones for the more even-tempered Mayfield make it seem as though there are two narrators at work.

PERFECTLY YOURSELF: 9 Lessons for Enduring Happiness by Matthew Kelly, read by the author

Resonant workshop leader and personal change author Kelly talks more about self-acceptance than getting things done. This program urges us to applaud our efforts even when they fall short, and to discover our individual melodies instead of reading music written by others. Clear tones and relaxed pacing make the author's voice sound especially rich.

This is a compilation of writings by those directly experiencing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The collection includes eyewitness accounts, personal journals, short stories, and even poetry. THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA by Ernest Hemingway, read by Donald Sutherland

Sutherland's gentle and thoughtful reading of Hemingway's 1952 classic is spot-on perfect. When an old fisherman from a Cuban village hooks a great marlin and is pulled out to sea, he must struggle to survive. Sutherland catches the cadence and intonation of Cuba even without much accent, as well as the weary determination of the old man.

OF FIRE AND NIGHT: The Saga of the Seven Suns: Book 5 by Kevin J. Anderson, read by David Colacci

Earth defense forces battle human-hating robots in book five of this popular series. Much of the drama lies not in the action, but in the complex relationships among the characters. David Colacci's nuanced performance does justice to this complexity. His sense of engagement is contagious as the intensity of the plot builds.

MONTREAL STORIES by Mavis Gallant, read by Margot Dionne

To call the families in these 15 stories dysfunctional would be an understatement. Gallant's characters are misplaced even in location—not French, British, or American, they always seem uncomfortable in their surroundings. The tension can be heard in Margot Dionne's smooth narration. Listening to Dionne you almost forget this isn't her own life she's describing.

THE ONE PERCENT DOCTRINE: Deep Inside America's Pursuit of Its Enemies Since 9/11 by Ron Suskind, read by George Guidall

This highly critical examination, and judgment, of the present Administration's conduct of the "War on Terror" is performed effortlessly. Guidall reads with a clear, resonant voice of events, and meetings. He ably expresses the tone and emotion of conversations and in narrative passages, his pacing and emphasis are nearly flawless.

MAYFLOWER: A Story of Courage, Community, and War by Nathaniel Philbrick, read by Edward Herrmann

This is the history they don't teach in school. Philbrick gives an unvarnished account of ambition, greed, and violence among early American colonists and Native Americans. Ed Herrmann's forceful, eloquent voice conjures up rough seas and misty New England mornings, and the twinge of sadness in his tone seems just right.

NEXT by Michael Crichton, read by Dylan Baker

Crichton gives listeners a satirical thriller about biogenetics, with plenty to think about and more than a few giggles. Through several stories that intersect, Dylan Baker gives one of those magical performances in which the narrator disappears, while a world appears populated by amoral biogeneticists, bounty hunters, bullies, and lawyers.

NORTHANGER ABBEY by Jane Austen, read by Juliet Stevenson

Austen's parody of a gothic novel gets an elegant reading to match its elegant prose. Sheltered Catherine Morland goes to fashionable Bath with a wealthy neighbor, and discovers society and love. Juliet Stevenson gives each character a unique voice--the duplicitous Isabelle or Catherine's vacuous hostess--and invests each conversation with energy and importance.
