WUTHERING HEIGHTS by Emily Brontë, read by Patricia Routledge

Patricia Routledge’s newest rendering of Brontë is not simply a reading, but a fully realized dramatic performance. With consummate artistry she creates each character to sound perfectly faithful to the author’s vision. Hindley’s drunken rants, Cathy’s fury, and Heathcliff’s untamed passion combine to stab us like powerful tragedy.

BLEAK HOUSE by Charles Dickens, read by Sean Barrett and Teresa Gallagher

Audio is a great way to enjoy Dickens, especially as he himself believed the best way to deliver his material was to read it aloud. By turns darkly humorous, horrific, and poignant, this is great entertainment. Narrators Sean Barrett and Teresa Gallagher more than hold their own with the complex story and multitude of characters.

UNDONE! by Paul Jennings, read by Stig Wemyss

The wonderful team of Jennings and Wemyss never ceases to amaze; their stories are always fascinating, well-written listening experiences. Several of these stories are more poetic than usual, even melancholy. Stig Wemyss never disappoints, always narrating perfectly. The contrast in his vocal creations is astonishing; characters can sound dear and sweet one minute and become horrid, hectoring bullies the next. The best are a 95-year-old grandfather and his grandson, who stop at nothing to outdo each other. Wemyss’s Aussie accent adds to listeners’ fun. He even creates his own sound effects when he pronounces words with near onomatopoeia. Each ending is surprising and believable.
