Wavedancer Foundation Makes Waves--Producer John McElroy updates AudioFile readers on The Frank Muller Fund:
Just over a year ago, a colleague called to tell me about Frank Muller's motorcycle accident. Although the details were sketchy at the time, I realized immediately that Frank and his family were in trouble. At the best of times, making a living in the arts is difficult. But when misfortune strikes, financial hardship soon follows, even for the most successful.
That's why my colleague David Rapkin and I, with the generosity of Stephen King, started the Wavedancer Foundation for disabled performers, writers, and members of the production community. In the last year, Wavedancer has helped the Mullers restructure their financial lives, allowing Frank and his wife Erika to focus on what's really important now-his recovery and his children's well-being. In the coming months and years, we hope that Wavedancer will be of similar service to others in need. You'll be hearing more from us in the near future as we plan our next event and launch a capital campaign.--John McElroy
AudioFile is grateful to everyone who contributed to the Wavedancer Foundation in honor of our tenth anniversary celebration.
August 2002 Update
Muller continues to recover from a devastating motorcycle
accident in November 2001. Frank was critically injured with
head and facial trauma, and broken limbs, but he is getting
excellent medical care and making good progress with the care
of his wife, Erika, and the support from many friends.
The establishment of the Wavedancer Foundation and benefit
performances in Frank's honor have provided help to the Muller
family. AudioFile dedicated its 10th Anniversary Evening to
Frank on July 19, 2002 and asked for donations to the Wavedancer
Fund. The evening of readings by Golden Voice narrators George
Guidall, Wanda McCaddon, Barbara Rosenblat, and Jay O. Sanders
was a huge success, made even more so by the funds raised
for Wavedancer.
The biggest news for the Muller family is the birth of their
second child, Morgan, born in July 12--seven pounds, healthy,
and with a shock of red hair. Frank is working on walking,
balance and vision rehabilitation. His speech is still impaired,
but the staff at the rehab center are using his audio performances,
played from cassettes, to prompt his speech therapy! That
should motivate him--Frank has always been a perfectionist
about his voice and his work!
AudioFile continues to stay in touch with the Mullers, and
we'll continue to post updates here. Ric Johnson's fan
site has frequent updates.

Benefit
Held for Frank Muller and Family.
Best-selling
authors PAT CONROY, JOHN GRISHAM, STEPHEN KING, and PETER
STRAUB join in a benefit performance February 2 in NYC.
In
November 2001, Frank Muller sustained debilitating injuries
in a motorcycle accident. Friends and colleagues have established
The Wavedancer Foundation to help Frank and his family. A
benefit performance by these celebrated authors, whose works
Frank has recorded, brought out 1,000 people to Town Hall
on Broadway.
The
unprecedented lineup of authors drew audiobook fans, Frank's
narrator colleagues, and many audio publishers, as well as
the authors' fans. John Grisham, Peter Straub and Stephen
King each read from their works, and Pat Conroy spoke to the
audience, thrilling at the opportunity to be "on Broadway."
Audio clips of Frank reading each of the authors' work, were
part of the evening hosted by George Guidall. Our sadness
for Frank's misfortune mixed with gratitude to the authors
who gave their time and brought so many of us together.
Book
and audiobook signings finished the evening for ticket holders
who donated $150 or more to the Wavedancer Foundation. The
foundation has raised $300,000 so far, and additional benefits
are planned. Funds raised through Wavedancer/ Frank Muller
Fund will help the Muller family's needs as Frank works toward
recovery.
