Mystery & Suspense • 5.8 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1997

The inspector's name is Gently, and that is how this whodunit proceeds. From the opening lawn tea to the closing soiree, the post-murder action is mainly verbal and the participants veddy British. The victim is a rakish poet; the suspects, jealous rivals and rather whiny ones at that. Alexander John makes the most of his radio training, giving identity to individuals who might not otherwise stand out. His deliverence is at times as delicate as a finger sandwich. Those whose taste runs to edge-of-the-seat thrillers are likely to be bored, but those with the patience to appreciate a genteel approach will enjoy this quiet puzzler. J.B.G.
