Using an accent mimicking the author's native Taiwanese, Fred Stella clearly expresses Lee's anger. The book's language reflects the mixture of sophistication and slang one finds in educated nonnative speakers of English, making a convincing performance of Lee's exculpatory account of his ordeal at the hands of a system he claims suspected him because of his Asian background.
