THIRTEEN SENSES

This earthy story fictionalizes the author's colorful parents, young Mexican immigrants living on their wits in Depression-era America. His lush, romantic vision of their precarious existence is interpreted by Daphne Rubin-Vega, who distinguished herself on Broadway in the musical RENT. She does not distinguish herself here. She sounds like a young teenager who has shouted herself hoarse before coming to the studio. She reads as expressively as her limited vocal range allows, but without skill. Y.R.
