In a realistic portrayal of cops and robbers Higgins details the conflict between loyalty and betrayal faced by criminals who find themselves entangled in the web of justice. Reader Mark Hammer's grizzled voice is too worldly, however, to fit the ages of the young characters in this particular selection. Since individual characters aren't represented by separate voices, the listener must pay close attention to determine the speaker as police or criminal. Hammer does bring a pragmatic style to the conversational tone of the book while also bringing to life the voice of the hardened criminal. J.L.R.
