Larry McMurtry, of LONESOME DOVE fame, has changed, he admits, in these "chats" about his recent automobile trips. He says his mind didn't recover for five years after heart surgery, and he still may be "half a bubble off plumb." Though mundane and random, his travelogues merit scrutiny to reveal their depth. "These tribes say they want to be called Native Americans," he observes, "but their self-painted sign says INDIAN MARKET and they sell Indian blankets and Indian jewelry." George Guidall's voice is avuncular enough for an old man's memoirs, but he is too proper for the language and style of an author we know is Western and crusty. J.A.H.
