THE FLIGHT OF THE CORMORANTS

The pressure of development on the quiet life of Easdale Island is the focus of Withall’s novel. The tranquility of the island is disrupted by the arrival of young Dr. Alan Beaton and Jack McDougal, who works for an American developer eyeing Easdale for a mammoth holiday resort. James Bryce enjoys a good accent and has many to interpret, both local and imported, though his American English is exaggerated. A slow start to the book gives Bryce a good chance to introduce these island characters as neighbors and friends before they divide up into pro and anti-development camps.
