JOURNEY TO THE RIVER SEA

What a treat! Narrator Patricia Conolly adeptly establishes a tone of excitement and reinforces each character with wit and gentle irony. Our hero, Maia, is a wealthy orphan taken in by distant relatives she's never heard of in Brazil. The lush rainforest is a long way from the boarding schools of 1910 London. The Amazon River is what the people living there call the River Sea, and Maia is looking forward to exploring its exotic beauty, but first she's got to ditch her two evil cousins who want to get their hands on her money.
