This collection gathers 93 letters and speeches spanning the life of the president who led the nation through the Civil War. Some letters are routine, but others offer a glimpse of President Lincoln's personality and character, especially the letters from the Civil War period, which deal with slavery and issues of equality. The Lincoln we see is melancholy and pessimistic but firm in his principles. One letter, in which Lincoln says he'd rather be assassinated than give up his ideals, eerily foreshadows his death at Ford's Theater. George Vafiadis brings an appropriately presidential voice to Lincoln's words. This collection's flaw is that it does not provide context for the material. J.A.S.
