UNDERGROUND AIRLINES

Narrator William DeMeritt expertly captures the bleak tone of Winters's daring alternate history. A United States that never experienced Abraham Lincoln in the White House, that never fully freed the slaves—in fact, that amended the Constitution to forever protect the institution of slavery—is a nation living under a cloud of constant conflict. DeMeritt provides the shadow of that cloud through the dark mood of Winters's conflicted protagonist, Victor. He starkly contrasts Victor with the apathetic monotone of his boss, Mr. Bridge, enhancing the potential for a strong emotional response from listeners.
