THE SECRET

The delightful romance of Lady Judith Hampton, who falls head over heels for a Scottish laird, despite the fact that she's English, is wrought with secrecy. The story is also enlivened by other well-depicted characters. The historical context, revealing the many perils of being a woman, including midwifery and the perceived uncleanliness of women after childbirth by the Church, add richness to the narrative. This well-researched story is told with esprit by Jill Tanner. Her swift changes of accent, from gruff Scottish warrior to beguiling English maid, are a pleasure to hear. B.H.B.
