Edward Lewis’s strident and somehow urgent narration leaches much of the import from these two religious self-improvement classics. One cannot deny the old texts are musty in this new millennium. But their core messages and techniques--focusing on a reverence for the inner life and an awareness of higher things and noble living--are made more dated for the lack of an appealing voice.
