The story moves from Cornwall to London to the United States as Alice Tregowan leaves home to marry. With her friend Eya presumed dead, Alice makes her way from miserable beginnings to a satisfying life while Eya--not dead at all--becomes a successful madam back home. All of this is illuminated by the expert Anne Dover, who treats each character with respect and honor. She makes the difference between country and educated Cornish speech clear and gives each participant an identifying speech pattern.
