Narrator Rebecca Soler offers listeners a dangerous taste of magic as she brings Garber's world of Caraval to life once again. With Scarlett finally safe from her ruthless father, the story shifts to follow Donatella, Scarlett's younger sister, as she participates in Caraval to win their mother's freedom. Though it's sometimes difficult to distinguish between the two sisters, Soler takes care to imbue Donatella's words with sass and Scarlett's voice with motherly tones. Returning love interests Dante and Julian also stand apart from other reappearing characters. While Julian speaks passionately with a romantic accent, Soler portrays Dante with purposeful tones.
