IRIS A Memoir of Iris Murdoch

This memoir of Iris Murdoch is less a memoir of Iris Murdoch than a memoir of her relationship with her husband, John Bayley, who taught at Oxford. As a result of the movie and two other memoirs published about Murdoch, IRIS AND HER FRIENDS and ELEGY OF IRIS, there are few who aren't aware of the death of the brilliant British writer and philosopher who suffered from Alz-heimer's disease. Tony Haygarth narrates as if the story were his own. He conveys Bayley's quiet anguish at watching Murdoch fall more and more into the throes of Alzheimer's, eventually losing her sense of self, and his frustration at not being able to do anything to save her.
