THE CUSTER WOLF

by | Read by Sam Grey

Young Adult • 5.25 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1966

Lobo is a white renegade wolf born near Custer, South Dakota, between 1910-1920. Orphaned early, Lobo spends most of his life avoiding the great predator, man and develops behaviors antithetical to wolves. Life in the wild is graphically described, omitting none of the blood and suffering. As a balance, Sam Gray is a calm and dispassionate reader, whose voice does not judge the sometimes horrible proceedings. The book is a strange choice for audio and may have a rather limited audience, in part because of the "gory details" and in part because, despite the popularity of wolves now, this reading lacks immediacy and involvement.
