When librarian Carrie Singleton's father, Jim, comes back to Clover Ridge, Connecticut, he aims to find his half of the multimillion dollar gems he stole with his partner, Benton Parr, who owns a jewelry shop in town. But then Benton is murdered, and Jim is arrested for the crime. Narrator Mia Gaskin effectively portrays Carrie's conflict between her loyalty to her ex-con father and to her boyfriend, the town's sheriff, who is pursuing her father for the thefts. Gaskin quickly helps listeners identify with Carrie and her changing attitudes. In addition, listeners will fall in love with the library cat, Smoky Joe, who serves as a catalyst for many of the discoveries in this charming audiobook.
