A NAME OF HER OWN

A true story inspired this novel about Marie Dorion, an Iowan who travels with the Astorian trading party to the Pacific Ocean in 1811. She has asked to join her husband, Pierre, to show anyone they meet that the mission is peaceful. Barbara Rosenblat shows through understatement the strength of the woman who faces the wilderness, a pregnancy along the way, and a violent husband. With subtle shifts, she shows Marie's growing toughness as she stands up to her husband and finds her own identity. Rosenblat develops each of the major characters as fully as Marie.
