Maggie Summer, professor and antique print dealer, is visiting her old college friend, Amy, and her husband in Maine. When she arrives, she discovers haunting in the house and chaos in the marriage. A preposterous plot involving a Civil War buff, family inheritances, sex, and jealousies of all sorts bumps along, surrounded by fog and the woods of Maine. A lot of antiquing, delicious meals, and small talk illuminate many distasteful mysteries, which end in the death of a young neighbor. Maggie and her swain poke around and help find the murderer. Celeste Lawson provides a lackluster, disinterested narration. Her inflections bring little drama to the plot, and the characters have no dimension.
