Butler introduces her charming Detective Inspector John Coffin and a less well-known part of London, the Southeast area. Coffin is pleased when he finally can purchase his own home, only to have workmen discover a body as they refurbish the place. Despite it not being his own case, he has great personal interest in it. When he meets suspects and victims’ families, he quickly develops emotional attachments. Narrator Phil Garner skillfully understates his delivery as bodies continue to be discovered amid the sex and drug culture of London's “Swinging Sixties.” Since the story is bleak and detailed, Garner adds a smooth flow to Butler's work. An excellent choice for those who prefer a mystery that is out of the ordinary. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/ JUL 04]
