Richard Armitage offers an emotionally nuanced and atmospheric narration of the fourth book in the Jackman & Evans detective series, set in England's fen country. The plot hits close to home when Jackman's sister-in-law tries to protect her family from a killer by committing suicide. Soon there are two more suicides, and Jackman, Evans, and the team are chasing a sadistic killer. Ellis comfortingly grounds the story by mingling its thrills and periodic horror with domestic details typical of a cozy mystery. Armitage narrates in an enticing baritone and handles the range of British accents with ease, including Evans's Welsh lyricism. If occasionally he overdramatizes and has a stagey approach to pauses, no matter. I'm eager for the next Ellis and Armitage audiobook. A.C.S. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2019]
