HANNIBAL One Man Against Rome

by | Read by Charlton Griffin

History • 11.25 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2003

Harold Albert Lamb wrote history and historical fiction of great popularity between the World Wars. This volume, currently out of print, is not the least of his achievements. It explores the life and campaigns of the famous Carthaginian general who drove a whole army, complete with elephants, across the Alps to worry the Roman Empire. Charlton Griffin gives a fine expressive and lyrical reading. Inexplicably, he undercuts it somewhat by adopting an unconvincing British accent (for an American author and a Mediterranean subject?) and eccentrically pronouncing some ancient names and modern terms. The discreet use of sound effects, though unnecessary, never detracts and does add a soupçon of color. Y.R. 2004 Audie Award Finalist
