Alfred Armiger is as cruel as he is wealthy. Still, his murder at the grand opening of his superpub comes as a shock. Simon Prebble's even tones are a perfect base for this fully voiced reading. He excels at the voices of a father and son who are equally astonished at the boy's sudden emergence into manhood, but his subtle female voices are equally convincing. Pacing during narrative passages is consistently suited to the actions or emotions described. This reader clearly understands and appreciates the material and lovingly enhances the crisp clear prose.
