A SEASON FOR THE DEAD

Hewson deftly creates Vatican City with all its pomp and secrecy. Detectives Costa and Rossi are desperate to catch a maniacal murderer who knows his church history and is murdering victims by following the same methods used to kill early church martyrs. Sean Baker is excellent as he portrays these "reverential" murders in a style that makes listeners feel like they're learning about the case through verbal asides from church and police insiders. While the setting and interesting bits of church history are entertaining, this novel is also violent and graphic. S.G.B.
