Essayist T Kira Madden performs her memoir with the raw, brutal honesty no one else could give it. With little emotional modulation, she lets her stream-of-consciousness writing plunge listeners into her childhood in Boca Raton, Florida. It was marked by material wealth, neglect by parents who were struggling with addiction, and racism. Her calm, steady voice provides some contrast as she reveals the sexual turmoil that came with a turn-of-the-millennium adolescence steeped in rape culture. The story comes out in fragments and includes a look at her early adult years, when she was often still grappling with the aftershocks of her childhood. At times, a slight poetry slam cadence energizes the text. Writing a memoir of this depth shows courage--performing it is even more valiant. S.T.C.
