This splendid work of satire by the award-winning Russian author Vodolazkin involves Czarist General Larionov, who somehow managed to escape the Bolsheviks' secret police, and the efforts of a modern-day scholar, Solovyov, to find the general's memoirs. Stefan Rudnicki narrates this satire in his splendid stentorian voice. Rudnicki's delivery is rather deadpan, a tone that is perfect for this work. He affects a subtle yet distinct voice for quotes. His gravelly voice enunciates splendidly and adds an air of authority to the production. This reviewer wondered how Rudnicki could keep a straight face while reading some of the wry humor in this novel. M.T.F. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2020]
