It all starts when Dad and neighbor Whacka go to war over a barbecue ruined by Whacka’s not being invited. Only Paul Jennings can concoct such an outrageous premise and make listeners believe it. Narrator Kate Hosking cleverly delivers insults like “ratbag” and “Don’t tell your Mum, she wouldn’t understand.” Perfect sound effects, such as blood-curdling screams, a crowing rooster who announces a new day, and even a deliberately phony-sounding dog bark, add to the fun. Best of all is the awesome Australian accent, which Hosking carefully keeps understandable for American listeners. There’s nothing more joyful than a Jennings/Hosking audiobook! S.G.B.
