GIRL IN RED

by | Read by Richard Aspel

Young Adult • 5.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2000

The status quo of Poet's Rise Estates is interrupted by the appearance of gypsies. Their exotic presence rocks the Dover neighborhood, and teenager Frankie is ashamed and angry that his mother is a leader in the campaign to push the gypsies out. Fascinated by the stories of their neighbor who married a gypsy, Frankie is infatuated with the quiet, artistic gypsy, Emilia. Richard Aspel gives a solid performance from Frankie's point of view as a teenager who has recognized flaws in his parent. While the story touches on such universal themes as prejudice, love, and family dynamics, it may be too dull for some listeners despite the narrator's efforts. J.M.S.
