Listeners are immediately swept into a blizzard in Haller Creek, Montana, as orphan Ben Monroe and his two younger brothers seek sanctuary on a ranch. Fast forward to the present, and Ben is now a deputy sheriff. Narrator Dustin Tucker aptly handles the characters of Haller Creek. Becca Henderson, the girl Ben has always had a crush on, has returned to town to work in her father's store. A shooting puts her back in contact with Ben. There are older cowboys working on the ranch as well as elderly neighbors of Ben, and Tucker provides them with appropriately raspy voices. He also conveys Becca's fears as she deals with someone having shot at her and also with standing up to her overbearing father, which she is determined to do.
