Judith Cutler has created a warm and realistic investigator in Kate Power. Kate is newly promoted after surviving a threat to her life. She's soon back in the thick of things when one of her own officers goes missing. Kate's beloved Aunt Cassie adds a homeyness to this often harsh story. Patricia Gallimore is particularly effective with the immigrants who are part of a brutal prostitution ring. A number of subplots are kept on track by Gallimore's steady presentation.
