From short shorts to novellas, DISTANT VOICES offers a cornucopia of insightful entertainment. Every story provides thoughtful character studies. Many contain elements of horror or the supernatural. Some are sad. And quite a few are darkly funny. Rowena Cooper is the perfect choice to read this anthology. Her delivery calls no attention to itself, instead plunging the listener directly into each tale. Characters come alive without device, save for the few Americans sprinkled throughout the book. These people all learned to talk directly from John Wayne, whether they're natives of Connecticut or California. Overall, however, Cooper's light touch serves the material perfectly, and the lack of musical enhancement leaves the production uncluttered and enjoyable.
