An appealing protagonist and supporting cast [characters?], a strong plot, and Gildart Jackson's excellent English-accented performance enliven this audiobook. Young, smart Detective Sergeant Chris Waters has his first case as crime scene manager when the body of a murdered woman is found. The story follows the Norfolk-based police team as it follows leads to dead ends and new suspects. There's also some nasty office politics Waters must survive. Jackson establishes distinct characters, clearly defining even those with minor roles, and finds the appropriate tones for the narrative portions of the book. Grainger and Jackson teamed up on the popular DC Smith audiobooks. This latest work, a spin-off from those collaborations, hasn't lost a thing.
