PRINCESS OF THE HITHER ISLES A Black Suffragist's Story from the Jim Crow South

by | Read by Allyson Johnson

Biography & Memoir • 12 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2019

Allyson Johnson narrates this winding biography of Adella Hunt Logan and her family, as told by her granddaughter. Light-skinned Adella, born before the Civil War, was a suffragist who campaigned for African-American voting rights from her earliest days. Johnson skillfully employs a multitude of Southern and Northern accents and inflections for the host of characters who were important in her time, including W.E.B. Dubois, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, Theodore Roosevelt, and Susan B. Anthony. Living and teaching at Alabama's Tuskegee Institute, Logan fought for political and educational rights for African-Americans. Johnson captures her passion in sharp tones that shift to a somewhat ponderous intonation for letters and articles. Note: This work faithfully reproduces the racist language and attitudes its setting. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2019]
