BEYOND EDUCATION Radical Studying for Another World

by | Read by Timothy Andrés Pabon

Contemporary Culture • 8.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2019

Timothy Pabon narrates in a measured tone, being careful to help the listener understand this work. Often his strategic restraint helps clarify this sometimes pedantic audiobook. His patient delivery of complex arguments helps clarify the author's core contention that contemporary "modes of education" have historically been put in place by elites to protract the status quo and have enabled institutionalized racism and sexism. Meyerhoff argues for "decentralizing" higher education for the purpose of reimagining what a university is, how it works, and how it can be shape-shifted. Too often this text is turgid and guilty of the academic stultification it rails against. That said, it does raise fundamental questions about how our most esteemed institutions see their roles.
