There are echoes of Morrison's classic novel BELOVED in this well-performed audiobook. The ghost of a woman named Tempe exhorts her sister, Spring, to recount a tormented family history. The resulting flashback is horrifying and affecting. Battle-Felton's voice is hypnotic and clear, and she maintains a largely consistent pace that allows listeners to immerse themselves in the harrowing story. Spring's history is brutal to hear, and Battle-Felton does not hold back in her delivery. The complex narrative can be somewhat confusing in the audio format, but the performance is solid, and the patient listener is rewarded with poetic prose and a story that resonates.
