Narrator Penelope Rawlins delivers a solid performance, with highly effective voices for each of numerous characters in this audiobook. When Sir Ecgbert Tode dies, his widow, Emma, determines to pass on the duties of managing the family estate to the next generation. This quirky work contains more absurdity than mystery. The problem with Emma's plan? Her children either can't or won't take over the estate. Thus, she turns to her late husband's estranged nephew, Egbert, and his airheaded wife, India. Then someone finds Emma's bloody body in the mausoleum. Though it is difficult to distinguish between the names of Egbert and Ecgbert, the moment listeners hear their voices, it becomes clear who is speaking. Rawlins especially delights with her voicing of flighty India. V.M.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2020]
