Charlotte Brontë once wrote the beginning of a story about a young girl who is brought to a school for wealthy young ladies. Although Emma is well mannered and dressed in gorgeous gowns, the bills are not being paid, and she has no memory of whence she comes. This author has taken the story from that point and with many twists has turned those simple few pages into an adventurous vehicle for Donada Peters to read aloud. With her penchant for understanding character and translating words into conversation, Peters allows us to hear the sounds of nineteenth-century England. J.P.
