Eleven-year-old Portia and cousin Julian search for hidden treasure in the mysterious old house the family has bought and is hard at work remodeling. Layers of history are revealed as old gowns and antique furniture from the original owner are discovered. The eccentric elderly brother and sister living nearby are practically historical treasures in their own right. Colleen Delany's lovely reading voice matches the book's old-fashioned formal tone, providing just the right qualities of wonder and mystery. The leisurely pace and the innocence of the protagonists may strike some readers as dated; others will take pleasure in escaping to another place and time.
