Narrator Susannah Jones's mature tone and rich emotion grab the listener far more than this repetitive, overwrought memoir. Writer Aspen Matis's husband of three years goes to a friend's funeral and never returns home. Her grief at his absence is sharpened by the process of writing her first memoir, which is about her solo hike of the Pacific Crest Trail at age 19 four years before. Since the pair met and fell in love near the end of the hike, she is forced to write the beginning of their love story while living the end. Jones handles the overly descriptive language with delicacy and grace and somehow makes the rash and oblivious Matis a sympathetic character. This meditation on loss will be enjoyed most by Matis's dedicated fans. S.T.C. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2020]
