GREECE ON MY WHEELS

by | Read by Edward Enfield

Contemporary Culture • 9.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2003

A 69-year-old solo bicyclist in a mountainous foreign country would be remarkable in itself, but Enfield is also a first-rate reporter and presenter. His cultured BBC voice adds panache and authenticity to an itinerary inspired partly by the travel writings of Lord Byron, Edward Lear, and Benjamin Disraeli. Much of his trip takes place in the Peloponnese, the peninsula in southern Greece, while later sections involve the northwest section near Corfu. Enfield brings a dry wit and enthusiasm to descriptions of scenery, food, people he meets, places he stays, and local history. At one point he climbs up to a cliff where Greek women and children jumped to their deaths rather than be captured by the Albanians. Travel along on this one! J.B.G.
