Ross Greenwood's sublime writing is enhanced by David Thorpe's outstanding narration. Thorpe is unbeatable as Detective Inspector John Barton, who carries out the painstaking work along with his team. The story commingles scenes of warm family life and Christmas planning with the plans of a psychopath whose methods are meticulous and realistically rendered. Thorpe's best creation is tragic Barney Trimble, a kind yet disappointed old man. Because of the sizable number of characters and the glimpses of a serial killer's mind, audio offers an unbeatable but chilling listening experience.
