Listeners hearing this courtroom drama will feel like members of the jury that is evaluating the arguments of Louisiana attorney Jack Carney, as brought to life by narrator Kevin Stillwell. He delivers a perfect interpretation of a Louisiana drawl and flawlessly conveys the tonal patterns of that region. All the other characters are carefully portrayed as well; old men sound elderly, women's voices approximate those of real women, children seem young and innocent. The premise of the novel--that justice must be tempered with compassion--may be morally ambiguous but is compellingly presented. Stillwell makes Jack seem astute, natural, and likable. This novel is more than conversations between good old boys. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2020]
