Twice widowed, Rosamund Bolton is now, for the first time, truly in love. Unfortunately, her love is a much older Scottish earl, Patrick Leslie, and the frictions between England and Scotland may turn to war. When King James sends them on a secret mission to the continent, it is as if they have been given time together in paradise. Despite the passionate scenes, this romance moves slowly, and the listener has little access to these characters' inner lives. Virginia Leishman enjoys creating the minor characters as much as the leading roles. She is charming as Rosamund's cousin, Sir Thomas Bolton, and cold and terrifying as the two rival queens. Her vocal pitch encompasses everyone from little girls to old men with savvy and aplomb, making this historical romance more than the sum of its parts.
