HAND OF GLORY

by | Read by Richard Aspel

Young Adult • 8 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2002

Masson's mystery is set in Australia's goldrush days. Masson imagines a rich political backdrop to the story of Sylvia Hoveden, a spirited and independent British miss who travels to Australia in search of her missing twin brother. Once in Australia, Sylvia finds it difficult to know whom she can trust. Should it be the enigmatic Anje, a Basque undercover agent for the governor of Esperance? Or should she place her fate in the hands of the very conventional Simon, who tries so hard to be helpful? Unfortunately, dull writing and undistinguished narration spoil what should have been an exciting piece of historical fiction. Richard Aspel's heavy-handed approach to the characters and his inability to create credible accents, added to the author's failure to create sparkling language or engaging characters, make this one to pass up.
